06061 - Sustainable Wood Certifiers

Forest Stewardship Council
Founded in 1993, this nonprofit organization brings together environmental groups, the timber industry, foresters, indigenous peoples and community groups to promote responsible forest management. They evaluate, accredit and monitor independent forest product certifiers as well as certify forest products to meet their rigorous standards. Purchasing products bearing the FSC label assures that your wood product comes from a forest that has been responsibly managed.

Certified Forest Products Council
Formed in 1997 with a mission to conserve, protect and restore the world's forests by promoting responsible buying practices of forest products throughout North America. They have created a Certification Resources Center to help the buyer understand and compare certification systems.

Scientific Certification Systems
Established in 1984 as third-party certifiers for testing pesticide residues in fresh produce, they have evolved to become a certifier of environmentally sound management of businesses including forestry.Since its Forest Conservation Program was introduced in 1991, SCS has certified more than 12 million acres globally and audited and certified 400 manufacturers, distributors and retailers who make or carry certified wood products. SCS is accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council.
