Dustmites like moist environments. They especially love living in bedding, carpeting, upholstered furniture and drapes. They can cause an allergic person a lot of misery with symptoms including runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, lack of energy and sleeplessness.

To help alleviate this situation or to prevent future problems, start with your bedding. All top bed linens should be frequently removed and washed in hot water with unscented laundry products. Unscented is important because scents from laundered linens can also cause allergies, asthma and other health problems. While you’re at it, you might be safer to use unscented facial and bathroom tissues. Barrier cloths and protective encasements are an excellent way of controlling dustmites because they seal in dustmites and seal out any offgassing chemicals. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, a dustmite control product can be applied.
Essential to controlling dustmites is frequent vacuuming of all surfaces, particularly the soft surfaces mentioned above — carpets, drapes and upholstered furniture. Having these surfaces periodically shampooed or laundered is equally important. If your symptoms warrant, removal of these soft surfaces may be essential. Carpets can be replaced with hard surfaced flooring. Drapes and upholstered furniture can be replaced with harder surfaced materials as well.
Check your entire home for any possible moisture sources such as leaky plumbing, roofing gutters or foundation drains. Increase the ventilation rates in your home by using exhaust fans (such as range hoods or bathroom and utility-room fans), dehumidifiers, dehumidistats, air filters and air filtering HVAC systems.
Dustmites love pets too. Don’t forget to bathe your dog once a week and check out various pet dander solutions.
