Should You Recaulk, Reglaze, Retrofit, or Replace? Here are some considerations to think about when making your decision.

If you have old, single-pane, double-hung windows in good conditioned wood frames (the part the sashes slide in) and sashes (the part that moves) you may want to reglaze (replace the glass) with double-paned, insulated glazing units custom-made to fit into the individual openings. If the sash isn’t thick enough, you may not be able to follow this option.
If reglazing isn't in the budget, consider installing weatherstripping, caulking, inner or outer storm windows and insulating drapes or curtains to improve performance of the existing windows.
If the sashes are in poor condition, but the perimeter frame is okay, you might decide to retrofit the glazing and sash while keeping the perimeter frame and retaining the same window style.
If the window is in poor condition and nothing is worth saving, not even the perimeter frame and trim, you may elect to replace the whole window as a unit — glazing, sashes, frames and all. This option gives you the opportunity to change the style of window.
If you do replace, remember to recycle your window and all its parts properly.
