Sustainable Packaging

Our penchant is to always get our purchases packaged. Packaging is a marketing tool to sell the attributes of the product inside. Packaging uses an infinite number of resources and fills an un-imaginable amount of cubic yards in the landfill. Many companies in Europe have mandates that make the manufacturer responsible for the packaging and, in fact, in many countries you can leave the packaging for the retailer to dispose of.

After this past time of “giving” take a look back at how much you contributed to the waste heap in the form of just packaging. The definition below is a possible insight into how you can change the way you enable package.

Defining Sustainable Packaging
• Is beneficial, safe and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle;
• Meets market criteria for performance and cost;
• Is sourced, manufactured, transported and recycled using renewable energy;
• Maximizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials;
• Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices;
• Is made from materials healthy in all probable end-of-life scenarios;
• Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy; and
• Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial cradle-to-cradle cycles.
