Sustainability Certification for Furniture Five Manufacturers have earned Scientific Certification Systems' Sustainable Choice™ Label Under its new Sustainable Choice label for furniture, Scientific Certification Systems' (SCS) certification ensures that products earning the label have met the sustainability requirements of the new Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association Sustainability Standard (BIFMA SS). As a recognized independent third-party certifier of sustainability claims, SCS is proud to offer this enhanced multiple-attribute certification to the furniture industry. A variety of products, including systems furniture, casegoods, tables, and seating produced by some of the industry’s leading manufacturers — Allsteel, Gunlocke, The HON Company, Kimball Office, and National Office Furniture — were certified under the Sustainable Choice program. These products had previously earned certification under the stringent indoor air quality standards of the SCS Indoor Advantage program. “Sustainable Choice certification marks the next level of achievement for companies that strive to make a real difference in their environmental performance,” said Stowe Hartridge-Beam, Program Manager at SCS, “We’re thrilled to work with such motivated clients and to be able to help them communicate their achievements.” The BIFMA Sustainability Standard measures four elements of environmental performance: materials, energy and atmosphere, human and ecosystem health, and social responsibility. Products must meet prerequisites in each category and meet additional criteria to qualify for one of three certification tiers: Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
