Sonoma Mountain Village to Pilot LEED-ND (Neighborhood Design)
The First National Standard
Sonoma Mountain Village, a planned community where you can live, work, relax and play while reducing your ecological footprint on the planet, was accepted into the pilot program for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Developments (LEED-ND) by the U. S. Green Building Council and its partners, the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Sonoma Mountain Village, the 200 acre former Agilent Technologies Campus, is planned to be a deeply sustainable community of 1900 homes along with approximately 150,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment choices and 500,000 square feet of commercial space. It is expected to be complete in 2017. The recycling of existing buildings and infrastructure, which make up the commercial core, is underway and the first homes are planned to be ready in 2008.
The LEED-ND pilot program aims to recognize accomplishments for communities that incorporate smart growth, new urbanist and green design principles through third-party certification.
The LEED for Neighborhood Development Rating System integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism, and green building into the first national standard for neighborhood design. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a development's location and design meet accepted high standards for environmentally responsible, sustainable, development. LEED for Neighborhood Development is a collaboration between the U.S. Green Building Council, the Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Sustainability, environmental consciousness and healthy lifestyles are the founding principals of Sonoma Mountain Village, and LEED-ND gives us an opportunity to have independent certification of these efforts, says Brad Baker of Codding Enterprises. We're glad to be a part of this pilot program that combines green building with community planning.
Sonoma Mountain Village has also been invited to participate in the LEED-ND Focus Group, where more extensive analysis can take place and will help to expedite the Committee's ability to learn from the pilot program and begin revision of the rating system.
