Modern Laser-Cut Paper Lamps
Paper lamps from Brooklynbased Levent & Romme are laser cut single sheet thick watercolor paper. The paper has a soft textured and is opaque enough to make the designs stand out. The paper is rigid to hold its shape and let the the shades intricate cuts shine through.
The patterns began as pen and ink drawings inspired by the work of Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa. The materials use inspired by another Japanese American, Isama Noguchi and his well-known paper lights.
Their design aesthetic is based around traditional materials and craftsmanship, but they add a twist by focusing on technology in their fabrication techniques. With sustainability in mind, the shade fits together using a tabbed design so that it forms a tube without any fasteners or adhesives. And, of course, the fixture accepts a compact fluorescent lamp. The shades are available in four patterns.
Anne Romme & Fiyel Levent met while studying at The Cooper Union School of Architecture and have been collaborating on furniture, installations, and interior designs for the past two years. They design innovative objects on large and small scales, installations, interiors, screen walls and environments that augment spatial experience.
