GreenBuild 2007 Chicago Draws Record Crowds Greenbuild 2007, held November 7-9 in Chicago attracted a record number of attendees and exhibitors dedicated to "designing, building, living, and working in green buildings." The Greenbuild conference in Denver in 2006 collected 14,000 attendees that made the pilgrimage to the "Show of Shows" for green building and sustainable development. This year's conference was expected to draw at least 20,000 attendees; but it did much better than that. Lauren Kuritz, a Greenbuild staffer wrote in her blog the first day, "Greenbuild 2007 started off big. We hit the 20,000 mark early and that was obvious everywhere I looked...people were everywhere, energy was high, and for those who made it to the stage, they got what they sought." The USGBC's press office later told CoStar Advisor that Greenbuild 2007 attendance hit 22,835. Attendees clogged all the registration booths with a reported 3 hours of standing and waiting to obtain pre-registered badges. Many of the attendees were so unhappy they vowed not to attend next year. Presentations were standing room only, many rooms for presenations were unaccessable. These issues are a testament to the success not only of the USGBC's success, but to the popularity of the green marketplace. "Mainstream" doesn't quite express the acceptance of the U.S. population for the green building movement. The day before the conference, the USGBC launched www.Greenbuilding365.org to create global and online access to green building education. Currently, the website features a blog and videos coming from the Greenbuild conference, a poll asking readers what they're personally doing to lessen environmental impact (greening our homes and educating others tops that list), and a carbon reduction webinar. The USGBC will continue to add free and fee-based courses on green building technologies and innovation to give professionals training to successfully apply LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification to building design, construction and operations. Also during the conference, the USGBC announced the launch of another website, www.GreenPlaybook.org, a partnership between the USGBC, City of Seattle, and 20 others. The website provides strategies, tips and tools for cities and counties looking to build sustainable infrastructure, buildings and neighborhoods. The first phase of The Green Playbook focuses on helping mayors and county leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through strategies including green development. All the other rating systems for green building don't measure up to the USGBC's as the benchmark to measure against. |
