Solar in a Box

Companies Join Forces to Create Near Zero Energy Homes

Launch Challenge at Mobius LA Event

Ready Solar and Green Life Guru late last month announced the launch of the Zero Energy Challenge to significantly reduce America's home energy usage and eliminate our dependence on coal-fired power plants.

Green Life Guru, a Santa Monica-based environmental consulting and services company, has partnered with Ready Solar, an industry leader in modular solar energy systems, to develop a comprehensive protocol for retrofitting of existing homes to perform at efficiency and sustainability levels that achieve near-zero energy status.

"Until we learn to address our own energy consumption in a meaningful way, all other environmental campaigns will not stem greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change," states Green Life Guru co-founder, Gregg Steiner. "The major offender in the battle is our dangerously increasing reliance on fossil fuels. There are 151 new conventional coal-fired power plants currently being development in the US. Seventy-six percent (76%) of all power plant-generated electricity is used to operate buildings, and most of that energy is wasted through leaks and poorly insulated walls and attics. There is vast room for improvement."

Ready Solar CEO, Meredith McClintock, believes that combining Green Life Guru's Energy Star™ home performance testing procedures with a scalable solar solution is a winning proposition. McClintock states: "the goal has always been to create the most cost-effective whole house energy solution. Our customers get the most solar energy for their dollar when installing Ready Solar's standardized solar appliances after their home has been made truly energy efficient, and we aren't talking about just changing a couple light bulbs."

Green Life Guru, using the Department of Energy's approved Energy Star™ home performance testing equipment, performs a comprehensive evaluation to assess and repair the energy inefficiencies in the home. The home is made as efficient as possible by fixing leakage, airflow, heat penetration from the outside via insulation and Low-E Windows, duct sealing and cutting off non-conditioned airspaces from the home's living space. Installing solar after all home efficiencies have been gained gives homeowners a realistic shot at reaching zero energy status.

"Ready Solar's modular "Solar in a Box" system offers an easy-to-install, aesthetically superior renewable energy solution at an affordable price," says Steiner. "Purchasing an off-the-shelf solar system eliminates the costly site visits and custom sizing process, making it easy to select a standardized system just as you would a refrigerator or television. We have practically eliminated the unknown for our customers in purchasing solar. It's stylish, cost-effective and modular. No other solar solution in the industry can compare. We invite everyone in Southern California to take the Zero Energy Challenge."

Solar in a Box is currently available nationwide. Ready Solar and Green Life Guru exhibited together at Mobius LA, October 24-26 to kick-start their joint venture.

Ready Solar is based on the prefab model: to reduce waste, eliminate costly design processes & provide high-quality, standardized systems at affordable prices.

Green Life Guru is the creation of two Los Angeles fathers, each with two children, who joined forces to make a difference through local activism. Inspired by such environmental leaders as William McDonough and Global Green USA, the Gurus formed a consulting company to help protect the health and future welfare of their children through advocating a toxin-free living environment and efficient home energy performance.
