Green Planet Paints
A new line of ecological, clay-based paints developed in southern Arizona under the name of Green Planet Paints. Available in 43 interior colors on-line and in several stores in the western United States. What makes these paints different from conventional brands is the absence of a petrochemical source. Green Planet Paints founder, Meredith Aronson, reports that her paint formula combines 11 ingredients including water, marble, porcelain clay and a soy-based resin. Aronson continues to develop new formulas and she is working on designing a line of paints suitable for commercial use, while remaining committed to hiring locally and keeping her focus on ecologically beneficial products.
unique in being a boutique color house that makes natural paints here in the US. They can respond quickly to changes in new environmental products without the competing interests of a larger company. They work to maintain principles of sustainability in their product, crafting their paint in small batches in ways that are environmentally responsible.
Choices they've made in their paints:
to use a soy-based alkyd resin to make a premium paint. Soy, sustainably produced, is a major component of the paint. Unlike most resins used in paints today, it does not come from a petrochemical source. In addition, the performance of waterborne alkyd resins in creating durable, premium high solids paints is unmatched.
to minimize additives that create complex chemistries in the paint. Most performance-based additives are synthesized molecules that may not break down easily in the environment. Arguably, by choosing products that do not add to the volume of these materials produced, you are benefiting the planet.
to use mineral pigments that are produced with low energy processes resulting in unique, colorfast colors that are largely based on clay. This differs from the majority of colorants used in commercial paints, which are more typically made of synthetic dyes or high energy processes.
to fully disclose the ingredients in their paints. They believe you deserve to know what you're breathing, touching, and living with in your home. So they tell you, right on the label.
to make a premium paint using premium materials without charging an exorbitant price. They use unique resins, unique pigments, and maintain a high volume of solids in their paint because they know you want a high quality product that performs well and has incredible beauty.
